I shall never know what the problem is; though I am suspecting h/w problems as now I can't get any timer code to work (even from Myke Predko's book -- copied verbatim). Went through almost all 25 of my PICs thinking it was a PIC problem..nah... Again, thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
