Classic knee-jerk reaction. It wasn't a very bright idea then, and it isn't a very bright idea now. I believe the technical term is "due process", and it's somewhere in our Bill of Rights and says, "nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without ..."
