I have a bit of experience in RC airplanes. A marginal radio is a very expensive piece of equipment. If you are talking about a little steering for an airplane that works well as a free flight model you might get away with it, otherwise be aware new, four channel equipment is available for a little over $100 including three servos. Hobby Lobby handles a new fad called "Park Flyers" that may serve as inspiration.
