I distinctly recall from back in the '60's a model airplane magazine article about an electronic autopilot that worked by detecting differences in the earth's electrostatic field, which IIRC changed by several thousand volts per meter. Detectors in the wingtips would sense the difference. Supposedly worked, article included schematics, all analog of course. Always wondered what became of that idea.
