The datasheets sez not to use PIC A/D's with input impedances > 10Kohms. The sensor is basically a phototransistor, with a 2 meg collector resistor for high gain. So I either need to use a buffer, or do what the data sheet says not to do. Now the obvious way to accomplish this is with a simple op-amp unity gain circuit, as shown in the attached schematic. All fine and well, but the op amp costs US$0.95, whereas the sensor costs US$0.15. It's costing me more to buffer the signal than the original sensor costs! My assignment was to come up with a really low cost sensor, so far, not so good. Now, we in the consumer appliance field consider a buck to be a lot of money. What I'd like is either: A. To decide I can get away with no buffer at all, by hook, crook, cheat or trick. OR B. To use a cheap two-or-three transistor amplifier. I get transistors three for a nickel, and resistors four for a penny, so any concievable combination of bipolar transistors and resistors would be plenty cheap.
