Oh yeah.  I've used a simple circuit that is just a PNP transistor and 3
resistors.  It's outlined in APP Note AN522 on the last page.  It's gone
into several hundred thousand steam irons now, without any reported trouble.
Should cost you about US$0.03 in volume.
