When The US Navy shelled Havana in the Spanish-American war they lobbed huge pillows of dynamite from an air cannon in a specially built boat. I don't recall the details but the article I read appeared in the NRA magazine in the early 70's. Apparently the dynamite could not be launched with a powder charge without detonating. As I recall, the boat could not be refitted to any other task because it was a hull built around a huge compressor. Compressed air can be very serious business!
