I frequently use the ULN2803A darlington transistor array manufactured by Toshiba and others as a driver. This linear IC has 8 darlington transistor drivers each capable of 500 mA at 50 Vdc. The ULN2803A"P" is packaged in a 18 pin DIP and is available from Jameco (www.jameco.com) for $0.69 as Jameco P/N 34315. The ULN2803A"FW" is packaged in a 18 pin surface mount SOL package. The inputs to these darlington transistor drivers may be directly connected to the output pins of the PIC microcontroller as the transistors arrays have internal base resistors and are TTL compatible.
