Some further insight: Actually the pport responds to the DEBUG commands and sets the levels accordingly. However, I measured the voltage levels with a DVM and found that high or 1 is aroung -5V and low or 0 is around 0V. My understanding is that the pport is TTL. It is measuring a significant negative level (the DVM leads are not reversed, to make sure I am in the right directioin, connected a diode LED). Am I missing something here, or my port is malfunctioning. If so, how the brother printer worked well?
