Reynolds Electronics make 433 Mhz receivers and transmitters for about $12.
They also sell encoders and decoders that go with the receivers and
transmitters.
Check it out.  The encoders and decoders are from Holtek. Also the
transmitter is the size of your thumb nail and the receiver is the size of
your little finger.
