Well I've had a similar experience with my home made 16C84 programmer. I made an adapter to program 16F877 parts and all of a sudden it wouldn't work any more. Turns out that the problem was the SOFTWARE!?? The later revision of the software (winPIC I believe) I was using no longer worked with my programmer. I switched to Pic-Prog and my problems were gone.
