I bought a DSP starter kit from Texas Inst./Spectrum Digital that uses a flash memory DSP with many microprocessor features. Check out http://dspvillage.ti.com/docs/dspvillagehome.jhtml and http://spectrumdigital.com I got the TMS320LF2407 eZdSP system kit. $300 I am still learning it so can't comment further.
