check out the RS components 197-xxxx series. I have used these for years
without problems. I have never observed the chip leads being crushed. This
series is made by Robinson Nugent I think.

on my desk I have the following exact part numbers for tube lot supply
197-2710    28 way 0.6 wide
197-2726    40 way 0.6 wide
197-2669    16 way 0.3 wide

the part numbers for single units are slightly different.
