+AD4- UL was originally an arm of the fire insurance industry.  Their biggest
+AD4- focus has always been fire safety.  They also focus on shock hazards, and

+AD4- UL Listing means a product has gone through a series of tests to prove
that
+AD4- it does not exceed allowed operating temperatures for plastics, it has
+AD4- certain minimum clearances around live electrical parts, live parts are
+AD4- enclosed with suitably durable materials  to prevent little fingers from
+AD4- grabbing live parts, insulation is adequate and within it's temperature
+AD4- rating, and the product won't start a fire even if the temperature
controls
+AD4- fail, and some other tests.
+AD4-
+AD4- UL doesn't test for a number of things such as small parts law (baby
+AD4- swallowable toys), whether a person could get a finger chopped off in a
+AD4- whirling fan blade, that the product will work more than once, that the
+AD4- product functions as advertized, or that the product even works at all.
It
+AD4- is amazing that UL is seen as a stamp of quality, given all the things
they
+AD4- don't give a hoot about.
