I got to see a development version of MPLAB 6.0 (the 32-bit version) at the Master's. We used it in one of the hands-on classes to develop code for the dsPICF30 chips. While it is obvious that it still has a long way to go, it is much better than MPLAB 5.xx. I think we'll be very glad to have it.
