As an alternative to having a fax machine, there's also a cheap  program
called MightyFax. It costs $19.95 and has a 30 day free trial period. Very
well worth it for what you get.

It installs as a printer driver and allows you to send any print output as a
fax through a modem. It's great for the occasional faxing that I do and it
has a receive capability as well.
