There are several other sources for these sockets, such as Emulation Technology. Microchip's prices are WAAAY lower than any of the other sources, like about 1/3 or less of their prices. If you find ones at lower prices that Microchip's, I'd like to know about it. For an Atmel-based project in a TQFP-44 package, I would up paying nearly $300 for a transition socket.
