Well, I am in the same kind of situation. I have been trying to look into a few options. The next I will try is the "El Cheapo" programmer. If you buy the book "Programming & Customizing the PIC Micro, 2nd Edition" by Myke Predko. It includes a PCB for this programmer, and software as well. All you need are a few components and some time to solder, and apparently it programs most chips. I am wondering if anyone else is using this, though.
