Hi Barnaby, sorry I meant a complete learning remote.
You won't find a component that "learns". But you will
find cheap sharp 3-pin IR sensors at the normal frequency,
these output TTL level on one pin, other two pins power.
The out pin may need a 1k pullup resistor.

You can get one of these from any TV or VCR, and mostly
the pinout is the same.

Then feed the output TTL level signal into your PIC and
program the PIC to "learn" it.
