Hi Mike, the idea is to drop 5% of the mains voltage across the series resistor and 95% across the bulb. 8% is even better. Assuming 120vac mains, 60w bulb, gives 0.5amp, so you need about a 12 ohm resistor, which drops about 6v. It will dissipate 3w, so use a 10w resistor, which will still get hot.
