Judging from some interesting X-10 sites recently posted, it looks like you may be able to replace the rf module inside the unit. They refer to the transceivers having "rf boards". One would imagine that they are simply decoding the digital output of a generic rf module. It would be interesting to find out if a 433MHz AM receiver module would work in place of the rf board in the transceiver. I think the remotes use some variation of that "Designing for Dollars" appnote on MicroChip's web site, which dedscribes a simple LC tank driven by the clock oscillator and controlled by an output pin. The tank was to be "tuned" to an overtone frequency of the crystal oscillator. If you knew the format of the digital code keying the tank circuit, you could build a 433MHz X-10 remote with your own PIC and TX module.
