I have stripped LCD text displays from all sorts
of old equipment, phones, faxes, copiers, etc.

The usual indicator is check if it has a 12 pin
connector (or 14pins with led backlight) and if
so they usually work with the standard 44780
signal driving it. Some chipsets are not perfectly
compatable but will work ok with the 8-bit interface
on the standard 12pin connector.
