Can you tell how many lines/chars it is ? 16 x 1 ? If so, probably
a 44780 + 44100 combo, in which case the pin-out for the cable
is pretty standard. You may be able to trace the 0V line to the
PCB (sometimes it's marked on the PCB) for a clue or get the
black stuff off the chips to be really sure
