I was not, but tried it (1k resistor to ground) but there was no change.

I wasn't aware that you had to do anything special to program the device
in "normal" mode.

At any rate, I tried it and had no luck.

Same error message, which, BTW, is the same error I get if I try to
program an empty socket. :(
