It is free and includes an >assembler. The version I have has two assemblers, mpasm.exe which has a kind of DOS text-moe windowing thing going, and mpasmwin.exe which has a Windows interface. You don't see either if you use mplab. They will both work as absolute assemblers (no seperate linking step required).
