The following comments are from James Newton... Quote 1 The Pocket has an nice big PIC, LCD display, variable supply voltage for margining and lots of IO. And it is open source (again) so you can write code for it to support a parallel interface if that is what you want or code to program any device you like. End Quote Quote 2 This is exactly what the pocket is. It is an existing, proven and professional design, with OPEN SOURCE (and hardware) so you can add whatever programming abilities you want to it. It has one analog source. End Quote Given that James Newton sells the pocket programmer, and though piclist.com I might add?!, it would be not asking to much if he knew what he is and isn't selling. The pocket programmer is nothing more than a very specialize PIC production programmer that currently supports a very small number of 14-bit core PICs (can be added to, just like Tony Nixon's engine but who has or is doing that?) and the 18Cxxx parts. No support for any 12-Bit core parts including the 12C50x family. Try adding serial eeproms, Atmel AVR etc and you will see that the pocket is not suitable for expansion and even if so of what value is open source if you have to write completely new code for different devices? Sorry to say the pocket programmer is far from James' universal programmer utopia and, as a soothing balm for the failure of CUMP, is nothing more than snake oil. But you can always get a little mileage with the placebo effect. Just make sure no one spoils the party with a few facts and the call for accuracy and responsibility. -Jim Robertson > >_________________________________________________________________ >Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com > >-- >http://www.piclist.com hint: PICList Posts must start with ONE topic: >[PIC]:,[SX]:,[AVR]: ->uP ONLY!
