To get it efficient and small you need to reduce air gaps and consider magnetic flux paths. I think a sensible option would be to pull some bits from a commercially made dc motor or generator, and use a magnet and coil device that are already curved and designed to be efficient in a rotating system. Like a small dc brush motor, has a rotating coil. You could fit this to your shaft somehow and use its curved perm magnets around that.
