I don't know how specific you want to be, but the general idea is that you can't copy the code itself, and those doing the programming must not have looked at it (or they might be 'tainted'). So the clean room reverse engineering method is to: 1. Take a group of programmers who disassemble the code and document (meticulously) the OPERATION of the code. This document cannot be written in code, but, IIRC, can use flow charts, diagrams, and english descriptions of the operation of the code being recreated. 2. Give the document to a group of programmers who (and this should be proveable in court) have in no way been in touch with the code itself or those who have seen it.
