Fiducial - from Latin fdere, to trust, confide, and fdus, faithful.

So both definitions are correct.  On the automated placement equipment
the dots are used by the optical sensors to calibrate the stepper motors
so that placements within the square framed by the dots can be interpolated.

Same thing on the earth I imagine, but a slightly more mainframe view.

On polar orbiter satellite imagery they are timing calibration marks
on the image used to earth-locate the image.
