A P90 is not a socket 5 cpu. I have a rebadged P100 which is a socket 7, rebadged meaning it is a P90 sold as a P100. Have a look at the socket itself - what type of socket it is will be on the socket. The P54C pentiums from P75 to P200 are socket 7 cpus with a voltage of either 3.5V or 3.4V. The P55C pentiums are MMX cpus 150MHz - 233MHz with a dual voltage of 2.8V. To upgrade your cpu, ensure the socket type on your mainboard is a socket 7. You then have to ensure the voltage, multiplier and bus speed are set correctly. Alot of mainboards have the jumper settings listed (silkscreened) somewhere on the board itself. They might even be DIP switches. So for a P54C P200 cpu: Bus speed: 66MHz Multiplier: 3x Voltage: (Will be listed on the top or underneath the cpu. Either 3.4V or 3.5V). For a P55C P200 (mmx) cpu: Bus speed: 66MHz Multiplier: 3x Voltage 2.8V Dual. A good way to tell immediatly if your cpu is an MMX one, look for cache things or surface mount things on top of the cpu, and usually the cpu is back where the pins are and silver where the die is.. It might have a fan/heatsink preattached to it as well.. P54C cpus are just that dark grey colour with no surface mount stuff on top, might be gold where the die is. Info for both cpus will be listed on top of it on underneath, and maybe if it has a preattached fan/heatsink, under the fan on the top of the heatsink - 2 clips will be holding on the fan. If you have the mainboard manual it will give your all the settings and info you will need to set it up for your P200 cpu. ----- Original Message ----- From: "michael brown" > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "James Newton. Need to know whether the cpu is a P54C (intel cpus before mmx) or P55C (intel cpus that are mmx). If it is an mmx cpu your mainboard will have to support dual voltages for the cpu. > > A P-200 is socket 7 cpu. If it is a P-200 MMX it needs a split voltage > supply. A P-90 is likely to be a 5 volt processor in a socket 5. The short > answer is that the cpu is probably not compatible with your motherboard. > Nope a P90 is a socket 7 cpu, and is either 3.5V or 3.4V. And yes your correct about the MMX cpu. -Mg. -- http://www.piclist.com#nomail Going offline? Don't AutoReply us! email listserv@mitvma.mit.edu with SET PICList DIGEST in the body
