It is not the Voltage which matters, but the resulting Current. You can feed in any Voltage you wish (e.g. 240 V AC) as long as you use a resistor sufficient to limit the current to a safe value. Most pins have shunt diodes to the substrate and to Vcc so they can take a few tens of milliamps. RTFM .................................
