Kari, There is an application of an FIR filter in the applications data book from Microchip. Not sure what number it is, but is probably on the website too. I used this to write a filter program for a CW filter for Ham Radio Applications using the 16C84 at first, and then the 17C42. It worked well, but not as good as a dedicated DSP chip obviously.
