Can you advise what device you were referring to that was not much larger
than a dime ?

The only one I have found so far is

NAV-2300 GPS receiver board: The NAV-2300 GPS receiver is the top board in
the receiver unit. The receiver chipset comprises a footprint of 70 mm x 50
mm x 12 mm. A dual in-line male connector interfaces at TTL levels.
