It seems a pretty simple thing to do that could be useful would be to have a forward looking radar that backs down your cruise control speed to maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you. Though not handling the whole driving job, it seems it would be a help. Later this could be combined with steering following some sort of marker (probably a radiating cable or something like that) down the center of a lane on a freeway.
