I have seen (on TV) demonstrations of cars with video driving systems, sensors that pick up magnets in the road, and obstacle avoidance using ultrasonic ranging. Not combined into one car, these were separate companies and demonstrations. I also know that there is a Safety Warning System that has been established (at least in the US) where agencies (police, fire, ambulance, construction, etc.) use a transmitter to broadcast information. However, these systems are not in wide use. I have a radar detector with an SWS receiver, and have picked up only one warning in about 2 years, and it was about 30 feet from the cop on the side of the road, and after about 5 minutes of sitting in traffic waiting to go by him. Lastly, they are already putting reflectors and rumble dots (technical term -- don't know what else to call them) on the road, and I don't see why they can't add a magnet in them. GPS with map data - okay, as long as you can keep the maps updated and have a decent time standard in your car. Thermal camera system - optional in Cadillac Seville(?) ~ $1000 (US), add logic to avoid people/animals.
