imho a 56K pdf is a small pdf but it helps if you draw the schematic in b&w in the computer. You can also do some tricks with the scanned image to make it b/w (despeckle, noise reduce, kerning, maybe Smith filter). All this reduces data size. It depends on what graphical tools you have. I've made some experiments with JPG (!) and it is not so bad. Just don't crank the compression level up very high.
