You can get lattitude from GPS, but altitude is going to have some serious
margin for error.

I have been doing some searching on the net about embedded gps. I am
completely new to the subject and am a little overwhelmed by the options and
info available. I guess I need a starting point, if someone could point me
in the right direction.

I have a product that is a remote datalogger-type. It needs to know its
elevation and latitude (date would be nice too). Instead of requiring the
user to find and enter the info, it would be nice if it could do it
automatically. Would a gps module give me this info directly or is there
some kind of database type processing needed? What kind of info do the
modules give and in what form? Is it something a pic (17C44) can handle?
What kind of price range are we talking about for this capability. This
isn't something that will be moving constantly, but can be moved and placed
in a different area.
