I had the same problem when I first tried to interface to an LCD. I found out that my problem was due to: a) I had the data lines backwards.. b) Then I added a longer delay and it worked perfectly. You should also make sure that your setting it up in the correct mode (4bit vs. 8bit). At first I'd stick with 8 bit mode as it's simpler and easier to debug. Good Luck!
