If RF is too hard, try infrared.  you can use a lens at the
reciever to extend the range.  Use a simple on/off blinker to
send plain ascii at a baudrate you choose.  A phototransistor
or pin diode, amplified with an opamp,  will make a good
reciever.  After all, infrared is just a little faster than
microwave.
