Microsoft word will allow you to select and deal with columns of characters, just hold down the alt key before and during you start selecting the text you want. Choose a fixed width font and have fun. Excel will transpose columns and rows for you, but it's a little trickier. I imagine vi or emacs probably would do what you want as well. -Adam (yay!
