The one sure fire tried and proven method to tie almost any spreadsheet up in knots is to use a circular reference (which need not be direct - subtle recursion induced by the need to re-calculate a statistical result with some part of the result proper creeping into the input data is an example). I have no experience with gnumeric but I suspect that by retracing your steps backwards through the edit process you will be able to identify the step that closed the circle.
