I think you will find that this is related to MPLAB being a 16 bit application
operating in a 32 bit environment, and the 16 bit environment hosting does not
transport the features of the modern fancy mice well.

I know I have exactly the same problem when I work the scroll wheel on my mouse.
It seems to be sufficient to just change windows within MPLAB if you have
multiple MPLAB windows open, and the act of giving the window the focus again is
enough to refresh the cursor and show it.
