You don't have to use the MPLAB editor. I use a separate editor (Textpad), as I have no use for the one in MPLAB. Textpad is smart enough to warn you if some other program changes the file while you're working on it. MPLAB isn't anywhere as smart, but there is no need to even open the file there until you are trying to interactively trace the program (I use the ICD). I just hit the compile button, look at where the error is, close the error window, then switch back to the editor and make my fix, etc. The only thing I have to remember on my own is to close and reopen the code window in MPLAB if I've made any changes during a debug session. MPLAB isn't bad; and it's better than finding, buying, and learning another IDE.
