neat idea.  Then, just put the transmitter in the same box as the receiver
and make it one unit.  Or even put a IRLED on my board and emulate the
transmitter.

a slight twist: how about one of those units that offer remote control of a
mains socket with an IR
transmitter? you should be able to hack the transmitter without loosing the
approvals of the
switching unit... not great but better than a kick in the teeth.
