I don't know if it is of any use, but Silicon Chip (www.siliconchip.com.au) published a Spped Alert/ Speedo project in Nov/Dec 99. Jaycar have a kit for it KC5279. This used a home wound coil to get pulses from magnets on the drive shaft. It may not be greatly sophisticated but it works on my car.
