A PLCC-44 (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) is a small square non-hermetic
(plastic)
package with "J" leads (leads bent under the chip). It is
smaller than a 40-pin DIP (often the extra 4 leads add no functionality).
It's also
one of the few packages that can be plugged into a reasonably priced SMT
production
socket. It can also be soldered directly to the board, or used with a
through-hole
socket.
