The company I work for sells the equipement for doing the emission tests here in Ontario, Canada. The gas analysis is done by passing a sample thru a tube with an infra red light source at one end and a detector at the other end. The critical part is the filter windows in between. CO2 absorbes a particular wave length of light, as does HC and CO.
