[you will recall when I asked what your advertising rates were recently - ie, last week - you said you were going to raise them, as PICList was getting so popular - care to publish the books?? - ;)]. Now that hurts... A) I HAVE NOT GOTTEN PAID ONE DAMN DIME FOR SETTING UP THAT SITE. Well, actually Amazon.com sent me a $25 check once for book referral payment, some of which may have been off piclist.com. B) IT COSTS $$$ PER MONTH TO PAY MY ISP FOR SERVER CO-LOCATION SO I CAN RUN ASP SCRIPTS AND USE MY OWN BOXS AND I PAY THAT OUT OF POCKET. I like ASP, and made my living off it for a while. I wanted to learn NT IIS admin and so I did the hosting my self. Also so you wouldn't have to look at popup advertisements... C) NO I DO NOT ACCEPT PAID ADVERTIZING FOR THE PICLIST.COM SITE. We were discussing massmind.org which does contain some of the same content, but to date, I have not sold any advertising on any of my sites. Has anyone ever seen any ads on these sites? D) I SET UP A PAGE FOR PEOPLE TO DONATE MONEY TO PICLIST MEMBERS WHO HAVE MADE OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE LIST (yes, there is a link for me) AND EVEN CALLED FOR PEOPLE TO HELP WHEN A MEMBER NEEDED IT, AND NO ONE HAS ***EVER*** DONATED. http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist/support.htm You want an advertisement? There it is. Make Jory, Wouter, Tony, Scott, Dmitry, Nikolai, Jeff, Alan and Me rich. Yeah right... Jory has donated a NT Server License and a 5 port 10baseT hub and another gent (annon) sent me SQL Server and helped with the parts for the new server box. The old box is now the SQL Server (for the archive). I setup my old personal machine as a Linux box (that is not doing DNS the way I want it to) that helps with the reminder emails. The local Microchip FAE loaned me an old ICD *AFTER* he saw how much I supported the ICD idea on the list vs Emulators. I've used it twice to play around and test ideas. He will get it back anytime he asks for it and you KNOW I don't mind publishing dirt, bugs, and whatever about Microchip. I'm an SX user and I publish their bugs too. Ubicom (Scenix) just donated some nice demo boards for an SXList.com contest and they have helped out here and there in the set up of that site / techref section. I've been clear from the beginning that I support SX chips (I like them.... more speed...) but as they are PIC clones and code from the SX can be used in the PICs with a bit of conversion or macroing, I don't see a problem. Anyway it is MY site and not really related to the PICList so I'll do what the hell I want with it. I would like to sell advertising on massmind.org and maybe sxlist.com or even piclist.com if Jory and no-one else minded. It would help to offset the cost, and if it did well enough, I would drop consulting and spend my entire day improving the site. I love it. Really, I do. But I would be very nervous about the relationship with the sponsor. I'd have to be absolutely sure that there would be NO influence. I'm FRIED that anyone would think I was using the PICList to get rich. There is an amazing amount of excellent advice and code posted to the PICList. Go back to 1995 or 6 in the archives (before I was an admin) and look at how many flame wars, rude B.S. and unmarked off topics there were. Tjaart is gone, Wagner is gone... how may others? . John Payson is gone. (Some F**K flamed him about a religious poem he posted in honor of his wife after she DIED) http://www.piclist.com/techref/postbot.asp?by=thread&id=%25RIP+Dawn+Elizabet h+Payson%25 Keeping the people who really make the list tick on the list and feeling good about it has been my number one job. We just don't have OT flames. Scott is back. Andrew is back. The problem with the list is that it is very hard to FIND the excellent answers, code, etc.. that have been posted. I started by trying to collect the best and most FAQ so that we didn't have to keep telling newbies about not setting the code protect bit, et all and so that the GEMs would be organized in one place. I have always credited authors with whatever code or information I've placed on the sites and I always link to their sites if they are in business. Ask them how many referrals they get from piclist.com? I've spend butt loads of time organizing and improving the site and NIK and now one or two other people are the only ones who have actually helped with it. Having said that, I was going to send a post to ALL: today saying that the Archive is now loaded all the way back to December of 1993 which is the first PICList post ever, as far as I know. It also does keyword highlighting on the results. Couple of bug fixes. Still damn quick.
