I have the same book and couldn't get the examples to work either.  If you
have any success getting something to work with the 3 signals (TD, RD, GND)
,please let me know.  I'm working on it, it's just not a high priority,
currently.

Hi All,
        I was wondering if anyone has had any success in getting some of
the examples to work from this book. I am attempting to get the examples
for onboard usarts (16c63) working, and have had no luck. The circuit
diagram in this text uses 6 lines, TD, RD, DTR, RTS, GND and COM.
I would like to be able to just use TD,RD and GND. If no-one has used this
book/example, can someone recommend an example that will work with the
on-board usart of the 16c63??
