All part of experimenting with the elements and measuring/observing. The foil is a good idea. I had a play with using an empty element former between the board and the element but it negated the advantage of the faster toaster element. The foil might be a good compromise. I'm using the top element mounted on an angle to compensate for the uneven windings. At least, that's where I got up to before it got put to one side. IMHO, it's worth getting a toaster just to pull the element formers out. They are really useful for the heat gun method as well as resting all sorts of hot things on.
